Been a Man

Alone the horse led
himself
brazen mane swollen
flush with wind
his galloping is an
accident.

He wants to
tiptoe the meadow.

I speak first
taking mental notes audibly,

“Beneath you are legs
below that
knees that nuzzle paisley
grass and your
horseshoe claws clank
even at rest.

Count how many stripped
screws hang
in the air like X-mas lights
dancing
dangling
around your head.

Come closer.

I’ll examine it
palpate
your skull
stimulate grey matter.

See if you’ve
got the horse sense to
realize
you’ve had the legs and balls
all along.”
